Where can I eat genuinely great wagyu? JAPAN’S BEST WAGYU 2026 is the official award built to answer exactly that question - 50 of the finest wagyu and yakiniku restaurants in Japan, selected by Takayuki Toriyama of Wagyu Journal, who eats more than 300 wagyu meals a year.
Restaurants are judged on four axes: the quality of their sourcing, their cooking technique, the room and the service, and their originality. Value for money and each restaurant's contribution to wagyu culture are weighed in alongside them.
No.1 Yakiniku Jumbo (焼肉ジャンボ), No.2 YORONIKU, No.3 Niku no Miyoshi (にくの三芳), No.4 Sumibi Yakiniku Nakahara (炭火焼肉なかはら), No.5 Ushimatsu (うし松), No.6 Yakiniku Ushinoe (焼肉うしの絵), No.7 Niku Kappo Jo (肉割烹 上), No.8 Nozaki (のざき), No.9 atami, No.10 Sumibiyaki Yuji (炭火焼ゆうじ) - that is the 2026 top ten.
The selection reaches well beyond yakiniku, taking in niku kappo (meat kaiseki), steak, sukiyaki, shabu-shabu and burgers. The best of every category is represented.
Tokyo dominates, but restaurants that define wagyu culture across the country are included too: the Kansai region (Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe, Shiga), Kyushu (Fukuoka, Kagoshima), Hokkaido, Tohoku (Iwate), Chugoku (Hiroshima) and Tokai (Nagoya).
Treat the selection as a guide, not a verdict. What matters is choosing to suit your own taste, budget and occasion. Every restaurant in the top 50 has earned its place, so there is no wrong answer.
JAPAN’S BEST WAGYU is chosen independently, with no deference to the industry and no paid placements. Picking only the real thing, from a specialist's point of view, is what the industry's trust rests on.
